The Latest on the U.S. Open (all times local):

6 p.m.

The scores keep getting lower and the names keep revolving atop the leaderboard at the U.S. Open.

Tommy Fleetwood's brilliant pitch out of the rough on his second shot on the par-4 15th set up a 7-foot birdie putt to drop him to 12 under for sole possession of the lead.

But only for a couple minutes.

Brian Harman, playing in the final group of the day, also birdied the 15th to tie Fleetwood at 12 under.

Four others are within three shots as the third round winds down.

5:22 p.m.

Walking to the 18th green, Justin Thomas knew he had a chance for history. He just didn't know how much history.

Thomas leads the U.S. Open after shooting a 63 in the third round, matching the major record for low score. It's the first 63 at the U.S. Open since Vijay Singh in 2003 at Olympia Fields and the fifth overall in tournament history.

Thomas' 9-under 63 also broke Johnny Miller's U.S. Open record for low round in relation to par. It was the lowest third-round score in Open history.

But Thomas was more focused on the 63 than the par record for the Open.

Thomas says "I had no idea in terms of 9 under being the best in the U.S. Open."

4:27 p.m.

What a day for Justin Thomas.

The 24-year-old Thomas eagled the par-5 18th for just the fifth 63 in U.S. Open history. Vijay Singh was the last player to accomplish the feat in 2003 at Olympia Fields.

Thomas broke the U.S. Open record for low round in relation to par. Thomas' 9-under 63 was one better than Johnny Miller's 63 in the 1973 final round at Oakmont.

Thomas also moved into the lead with his putt at 18. He is at 11 under, two shots ahead of Charley Hoffman and Tommy Fleetwood.

4:05 p.m.

Don't try this at home. Or at your home course.

Faced with the option of putting through the rough or pulling out a wedge and chipping off the eighth green, Rickie Fowler chose the latter.

It didn't work all that well.

Fowler pitched the ball to about 18 feet, then missed the next putt on his way to a bogey. It dropped him two shots off the lead and, to add insult to injury, it will still count as a three-putt.

Fowler came back to birdie the par-3 ninth to get back to one shot back.

___

3:31 p.m.

Paul Casey is looking to recover from another triple bogey.

Casey swung and missed from the tall fescue on No. 3, and then chipped out and it rolled all the way off the green on the other side. He finished with a 7 on the par 4, dropping back to 5 under.

Casey also had a triple bogey on No. 14 in the second round, but he finished with a 1-under 71 and a share of the 36-hole lead.

___

3:22 p.m.

Patrick Reed has joined the 65 club at Erin Hills.

Reed shot a 7-under 65 in the third round of the U.S. Open, equaling the low total of the tournament. Rickie Fowler accomplished the feat in the first round, and Hideki Matsuyama and Chez Reavie hit the number Thursday.

The 26-year-old Reed had eight birdies and one bogey. He missed a short birdie putt on 18.

Reed is tied with Charley Hoffman and Tommy Fleetwood for the lead at 8 under.

___

3:01 p.m.

Charley Hoffman is all by himself on top of the U.S. Open — for now.

Hoffman birdied five of his first eight holes to get to 9 under, one shot clear of a massive logjam in second. Patrick Reed, Paul Casey, Brian Harman and Tommy Fleetwood are at 8 under.

The 40-year-old Hoffman is playing in his sixth U.S. Open. His best finish was a tie for 37th last year at Oakmont.

___

2:16 p.m.

Make it a six-way tie atop the U.S. Open leaderboard.

Justin Thomas and Charley Hoffman have joined 36-hole leaders Paul Casey, Brooks Koepka, Brian Harman and Tommy Fleetwood at 7 under. Thomas made six birdies and one bogey on his front nine in the third round, and Hoffman birdied three of his first five holes.

A whopping eight players are at 6 under, including world No. 4 Hideki Matsuyama and Louis Oosthuizen.

Casey, Koepka, Harman and Fleetwood have yet to tee off.

___

1:50 p.m.

Steve Stricker is soaking up the warmest ovations of the third round in his home state of Wisconsin. And he's giving the fans something to cheer.

Stricker couldn't help but break into a wide smile when he made a 30-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole to get to 4 under for the day. The only disappointment was a three-putt bogey from 35 feet on the final hole. He shot a 69 and was at 2-under 214.

The way this third round is going, odds are against him becoming the first player since Tiger Woods at Torrey Pines in 2008 to win a U.S. Open in his home state. Results are not what will make this a great week at Erin Hills for the 50-year-old Stricker. He just has to listen to the crowd.

___

1:35 p.m.

Charley Hoffman is joining the jam-packed crowd near the top of the U.S. Open leaderboard.

Hoffman has opened his third round at Erin Hills with two birdies to move into a four-way tie for second at 6 under. He's one shot back of the lead shared by four golfers who tee off later Saturday.

Justin Thomas may have had one of the more entertaining birdies of the afternoon at the par-4 fifth. Thomas rolled in an 18-footer that went right to left from the edge of the green. He grabbed his putter and pointed it out to his left just as the ball dropped into the cup.

Thomas is 2 under on the day and for 4 under for the tournament.
