A group of holidaymakers on Lake Tarawera convinced singer Sam Smith to jump on their boat by blasting his music at him.

The Grammy-winning singer is holidaying in New Zealand - including a stint at Lake Tarawera near Rotorua.

Taylor Powell told TVNZ they spotted someone who looked like the British star on another boat.

Powell and her family friends began to blast Smith's smash hit 'Stay With Me' loud enough for him to hear, and waved for him to come over.

Eventually Smith's boat approached theirs, and he hopped aboard.

"He was taking pictures and selfies, asking what we were doing and how our holiday was going," Powell told TVNZ.

The singer was "genuine, easy to talk to and very lovely."
