BALTIMORE -

When Blue Jays RHP Aaron Sanchez came off the DL last week and pitched his first game in two weeks, he couldn’t say enough good things about catcher Luke Maile.

Sanchez said he remembered Maile from when they played in the Arizona Fall League together some years earlier and the great impression the catcher left on him.

Turns out, the feeling’s mutual.

Maile, whom the Jays claimed off waivers on April 6, said he remembers both Sanchez and Marcus Stroman from the 2013 Salt River Rafters team, where they were all teammates.

“I remember thinking back then that he was going to pitch for a really long time in the big leagues. I thought he was pretty impressive, can’t remember how old he was at the time (21), but I knew he was pretty young and his body, the way everything operated, everything came out so smoothly and he was tough guy to face from the other side,” Maile said. “I remember seeing a lot of hitters take a lot of bad swings, who were pretty good prospects of their own and obviously he’s continued to develop and has gotten stronger and continued to learn how to pitch.

“He left a very good impression and his poise out there on the mound, I remember that really stuck out. He always seemed to make his pitches when he was out of the stretch position, which for a starting pitcher, you don’t find that too often, and when you do, it’s special.”

As for Stroman, Maile remembers the uniqueness of his delivery and his personality.

“I guess what I remember about Stroman was the uniqueness of the angles that he creates, the windows that all his pitches seem to come out of, they all look so similar,” Maile said. “And what’s remarkable about him is he’s able to throw a sinker pretty much an entire game and get bad swings for the most part. You don’t find that very often.”

Interestingly, when Maile was playing in the Fall League that year, he was being touted as a future offensive standout.

“When I was coming up there was a lot of talk about moving me to left field or first base because my bat was so good and there were questions about my defence. You look five years later and it’s almost a complete opposite,” said Maile, who has…
