BALTIMORE - Welington Castillo hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning off Blue Jays reliever Jason Grilli to lift the Baltimore Orioles to a 5-3 victory over Toronto.

It was Castillo’s first career walk off home run and his second home run of the game.

In the end, the Blue Jays got burned by the bunt.

A pair of terrible bunt attempts, by Darwin Barney and Luke Maile, and a poor bunt by Ryan Goins, came back to burn the Jays. Toronto had numerous chances to take the lead for good on Friday night at Camden Yards but time and again they burned themselves with poor execution.

After a 58 minute rain delay, the Orioles came out in the bottom of the 10th to face Grilli. The Jays’ right-hander struck out Manny Machado and Chris Davis, but then gave up a single to Mark Trumbo before Castillo came up to bat. It was the fourth walk off victory for the Orioles this year. Baltimore is now 7-1 in extra inning games while the Jays fell to 2-5.

The Jays thought they put the leading run on the board in the seventh when Justin Smoak struck out and the ball careened towards the visiting dugout, bringing Chris Coghlan in from third. But upon review, it became clear that the ball hit Smoak after he swung so he was out and the inning was over.

The Orioles jumped into a 1-0 in the second, but the damage could have been much worse. Jays starter Aaron Sanchez gave up a single to Trumbo to start the inning. Two batters later, he hit Trey Mancini and then Hyun Soo Kim hit a single to load the bases. J.J. Hardy then hit a single to score Trumbo and Jonathan Schoop hit a grounder to Smoak, who went home for the out. The Jays thought they had a inning-ending double play with catcher Maile fired the ball back to Smoak. First base umpire Tom Woodring called Schoop out but upon a manager’s review he was deemed safe. But with the bases still loaded, Sanchez got Adam Jones to pop out to first to end the inning.

The Jays answered with three runs in the fourth and could have - should have - scored more. The inning began with Baltimore starter Chris Tillman hitting Jose Bautista and then walking Kendrys Morales. Smoak then hit a single to score Bautista and Devon Travis hit his 14th double in the past 19 games to score Morales. Goins hit a grounder to second to score Smoak. With one out and Travis at third, Barney lunged at a Tillman pitch in a bunt attempt that went awry (Barney actually dropped his bat) and Travis was caught in a rundown between third and home and eventually tagged out. A suicide squeeze attempt that was suicide for Travis. Barney then flew out to left field.

The Orioles tied it after Sanchez allowed the lead off batter, Trumbo, to single. The next batter, catcher Castillo, smacked a first pitch offering over the wall in right centre. Sanchez allowed the lead off runner in five of the six innings he pitched and was burned for runs in two of those innings.

The game marked the Major League debut of outfielder Anthony Alford, who was called up from Double-A New Hampshire with Kevin Pillar suspended and Darrell Ceciliani out with a shoulder injury. Alford went 0-for-2 and was removed for Coghlan to lead off the seventh with side-winder Darren O’Day brought in to replace Tillman. Coghlan promptly lead off with a single up the middle. The next batter, Maile, tried three times to lay down a bunt to move Coghlan to second, but couldn’t…
