Mayor John Tory says he will push to contract out garbage collection in Scarborough but supports keeping city staff on the job downtown.

Tory made the announcement in Etobicoke Tuesday morning, saying he supports a city staff recommendation about privatizing waste collection in Scarborough. He stressed that the move is about saving millions of dollars for taxpayers, not ideology.

“We must test the market and see if the same service can be done for less,” Tory said.

A new report released by city staff Wednesday recommends contracting out garbage collection services in Scarborough, but keeping city staff as the collectors for the old City of Toronto and Toronto Island. The report will go to the Public Works Committee next Wednesday, kicking off the process which could lead to contracting out the service. Tory said he hopes councillors will support it, pushing the report on to council for deliberation at the end of the month.

The city contracted out garbage collection West of Yonge Street under former mayor Rob Ford. Councillor Jaye Robinson, head of the Public Works Committee, said Wednesday that decision has saved the city $11 million a year.
