Twitter is suffering an outage for users across the UK

Twitter is down.

The hugely popular social network and micro-blogging service this morning greeted fans with a message telling them that "Something is technically wrong”.

"Thanks for noticing," the text reads, "We're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon."

The US social network’s official status page has been updated to reflect the ongoing outages, which were first reported shortly after 7:00 GMT.

Independent website, which tracks "when services go down or have outages", reported a spike in the number of people complaining about Twitter not working in the UK. 

Thousands of users have flooded the website with complaints about problems with accessing Twitter online.

Of those reporting outages, more than half (57 per cent) are experiencing difficulty logging into the website.

Meanwhile 24 per cent are having trouble with the US social network’s Android client, while just 17 per cent are struggling to use the iPad app.

During its first few years online, Twitter become known for its outages – often trigged by an onslaught of tweets and tweets during major world events.
