Gumtree: Car sellers targeted in Glasgow. Gumtree: Car sellers targeted in Glasgow.

Two bogus police officers have been stealing cars from people trying to sell them on Gumtree in Glasgow.

Detectives understand sellers are being contacted by supposed interested buyers, who then arrange to meet them.

At the meeting, two men claiming to be plain-clothed officers then arrive and take the vehicle.

Police have received reports of two separate incidents in Glasgow this week.

The first occurred on Wednesday at about 8.40pm at Glasgow Central Mosque in the Gorbals.

A second incident in the city on Thursday, which is believed to be linked, is also under investigation.

The first suspect is described as in his mid to late 20s, 5ft 8in, with a medium to stocky build, pale complexion and short dark brown hair. He was last seen wearing G Star jeans and a dark waterproof jacket.

The second man is described as around 6ft, of slim build, with a pale complexion and short red hair. He was last seen wearing black Nike trousers.

Both men were in possession of police equipment including handcuffs, airwaves and covert harnesses.

Detective sergeant Mike Leyton, from Cathcart CID, said: "There have been a number of incidents of this nature reported to police and it is important that people are vigilant when selling vehicles or other items online.

"Please be on your guard and ensure any interested buyers are genuine before arranging to meet anyone."
