Dylann Roof has been sentenced to death for the Charleston church massacre

The US jury found Roof, 22, guilty of 33 federal charges, including hate crimes resulting in death, for the shootings at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The white supremacist killed nine black parishioners in the hate-fulled massacre on June 17 two years ago.

He later admitted to carrying out the shooting in an attempt to provoke a race war between whites and blacks in America.

Roof, who represented himself for the penalty phase, was unrepentant during his closing argument earlier in the day.

Roof told the jury, who spent three hours deliberating “I don’t know what good it would do anyway” if they spared his life.

He added: “I felt like I had to do it and I still feel like I had to do it."

On the day of the attack he joined his victims at a prayer meeting for 45 minutes.

During the final prayer, while the churchgoers had their eyes closed in contemplation, he opened fire and killed nine.
