Mon, 07/17/2017 - 17:38 Undisguised Rolls-Royce SUV spotted as Cullinan gets ready for 2018…

The first Rolls-Royce SUV is being readied for launch next year and our spies have caught the clearest shots yet of how it’ll look without camouflage.

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan has been subjected to a tough regime of top-secret testing around the world, but these shots show the moment test crews let the big car’s disguise slip, exposing the entire front end of the Cullinan for the first time.

Although the headlamps of this example are missing, their apertures appear to be rectangular instead of the stylised shape found on the Rolls-Royce Ghost saloon and Rolls-Royce Wraith coupe. They flank an imposing Rolls-Royce grille and we can see distinctive air intakes in the front bumpers, which will channel cooling air to the engine and brakes.

In keeping with current Rolls-Royce practice, there’s an emblem and side-indicator repeaters forward of the front doors, while a chrome strip runs along the door bottoms at sill height. The test car rides on huge seven-spoke alloy wheels, although those on the production car are likely to vary. The look is very similar to the original Rolls-Royce Phantom, a now-discontinued car that sired the renaissance of the famous British brand when it was launched in 2003. It had a far taller stature than most luxury saloons and it looks like the Cullinan SUV might have similar proportions.

‘Project Cullinan’ is the official internal codename for the Rolls-Royce SUV, named for the world’s largest uncut diamond. When our sister title Auto Express asked whether the name would be adopted for the production car, Rolls-Royce boss Torsten Muller-Otvos smiled and said “I love the name”.

Muller-Otvos seemed confident with how the SUV had performed during testing and was candid when comparisons were made to its Bentley Bentayga rival, exclaiming: “The Bentley SUV is clearly the number two; Rolls-Royce is the best in the world and will be when our model arrives. We’ll bring a great new car and an authentic Rolls-Royce into the…
