Birmingham didn't sign John Terry because of wages, but surely LA Galaxy's Ashley Cole, Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing and Robbie Keane pose same problem?

Birmingham City manager Harry Redknapp has admitted there is interest in signing LA Galaxy's Ashley Cole, Stewart Downing from Middlesbrough and free agent Robbie Keane.

Cole is now 36-years-old, Keane is 37 and Downing is the relative youngster at 32, but Redknapp still thinks they have plenty to offer for the Blues.

"Ashley Cole, for me, was best left-back in the world a few years ago. He was just a fantastic player," the 70-year-old was quoted by the Mirror.

"His name was mentioned to me. When you have a chance to get someone like him, if he's available, he has to be of interest.

"Stewart Downing is a proper player, got a great left foot, he's fit as a fiddle.

"Whether we could afford him I don’t know. Wage-wise I don't know where we would go with it, I haven't got a clue what he earns, and he belongs to Middlesbrough, but I think they’ve said he can go on a free, so he's of interest.

"Robbie Keane is a proper player; a great professional and infectious character. He's a great trainer. He would be wonderful around the dressing room, showing people how you become a top-class pro for so many years."

This is an interesting admission from Redknapp considering after missing out on John Terry to Aston Villa, the Birmingham boss was quoted by the Mirror as saying he could sign "five or six players" with the money they would have had to pay Terry in wages.

Yet now he is targeting three other veterans who like the former…
