Former Porto coach says that Bruno Alves should be appointed as the Rangers skipper.

Former Porto coach, Carlos Azenha, says that Rangers have made a great decision by signing Bruno Alves this summer.

The 50-year-old wants Pedro Caixinha to make another smart move by appointing Alves as the club’s skipper for the upcoming season.

Alves, who was given extra time off following his participation in the Confederations Cup, will link up with his team mates this week at Rangers’ Auchenhowie training base.

Rangers’ humiliating Europa League exit at the hands of Luxembourg’s Progres Niederkorn has highlighted the need of a leader.

Azenha says that Alves is a “real leader” who commands respect from his teammates by setting high standards for himself.

He adds that Bruno will not be happy with how far Rangers have slipped behind their arch rivals Celtic, and being a winner he will try his best to turn the tides in their favour at Ibrox.

Azenha believes that Rangers are fortunate to have a player of Alves’ quality, and says he is one of the best professionals he has ever worked with.

“Rangers couldn’t have made a better signing, but Bruno needs to be the captain of the team,” said Azenha, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

“Rangers are behind Celtic at the moment but while it will be extremely difficult Bruno will not accept second best.
