France has surpassed Belgium as the European country with the highest taxes on the average employee, according to a new study.

Taking into account income tax, social security contributions, and value-added tax, the report by the Molinari Economic Institute concludes that the tax burden on the average salaried worker in France is 57.33 percent, meaning that they effectively will have worked until July 29 this year to pay their tax obligations, or 210 days.

France overtakes Belgium in the European tax league table this year, although the tax burden is only marginally lower on the average Belgian worker at 56.9 percent. This means that Belgians experienced "tax freedom day" on July 27 in 2016. After the Government recently introduced cuts to social security levies, employers now spend EUR2.16 for every EUR1 an average worker receives in net income, down from EUR2.30 in 2015.

Austria has Europe's third-highest taxes on individuals, with a total burden on 54.7 percent, giving it a tax freedom day of July 19.

The EU average tax burden on individual workers is now 44.96 percent, according to the report.

The study used OECD tax data and national salary statistics to reach its conclusions, with payroll tax calculations provided by EY.

The report's authors observed that countries with high tax burdens do not always deliver the best public services, and this seems to be the case in France and Belgium.

"The Belgian and French workers spend…

Clinton vs. Trump Is Manhattan vs. Queens
In 1964, when the New York Titans first moved from Manhattan to Shea Stadium, in Flushing, Queens, many wanted to rename the team the “Borros,” a play on “Boroughs.” The name was supposedly nixed because the front office was worried the franchise would be caricatured as “jackasses,” and so the New York Jets were born. (Talk about jackasses.) More likely, the team was worried about being associated with New York’s outer boroughs, long denigrated by Manhattanites as pathetic hangers-on to the…

The Secret Plan to Protect America’s Founding Documents During WWII
In the early evening of December 26, 1941, Secret Service agent Harry E. Neal stood alone on the platform at Washington’s Union Station and watched the train disappear into the darkness. It was 6:50 p.m. and the temperature had slipped into the 30s. For the first time in two days, he breathed a little easier. Agent Neal and his colleagues had rested little since the attack on Pearl Harbor three weeks earlier. Fears of a German or Japanese attack on Washington had sent American officials s…

POLITICO-Harvard poll: Americans brace for decade of slow economic growth
Eight years after the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, a vast majority of the country is pessimistic about any significant expansion of the economy over the next decade, according to a POLITICO-Harvard poll . The survey commissioned by POLITICO and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that 51 percent of Americans expect the pace of growth to remain at about the current rate over the next 10 years. That's a grim outlook at a time when year-over-year…
