The Northwestern High School softball and baseball teams remain in the hunt for Heart O’ North Conference titles despite returning from Bloomer Tuesday on the lower side of the scoreboard.

The Tiger baseball team actually trails Bloomer (6-5 in HON) by a score of 4-1 in the sixth inning. That’s when area tornado sirens halted the game.

The game will be resumed today in Iron River prior to a 5 p.m. make-up game between the two teams.

Hayward is 10-3 and Cumberland 9-3 in the HON entering Tuesday’s action.

Northwestern is 7-4 in the HON, played at Ladysmith Thursday.

Ladysmith (5-5) and Spooner (6-5) are also among the six teams still mathematically alive for the title.

Softball

The Tigers had a showdown game against the state-ranked Ladyhawks in Bloomer.

Both teams entered the contest unbeaten in conference play, but only Bloomer remained that way with a 3-0 victory.

Bloomer got the upper hand in the pitching duel between Northwestern’s Cassidy Friend and Bloomer’s Aliya Seibel with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Bloomer took a 2-0 lead on Shania Zwiefelhofer’s home run in the fifth inning then added another in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-0 lead.

Northwestern only managed one hit off of Siebel.

The teams play again Friday in Brule with the title on the line. A Tiger win would force a tie in the final HON standings.

Prior to Friday’s showdown, the Tigers hosted Ladysmith at 5 p.m. Thursday.
