The Superior High School Spartans and Ashland Oredockers split a Lake Superior Conference baseball doubleheader Monday evening at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The twinbill was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was moved up a day because of predicted rain.

Ashland won the opener 3-1 and Superior won game two 6-3.

The Spartans managed two hits in the opener, singles by Ben Rhodes and C.J. Fortune.

Ashland took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Jake Erickson’s two-run double then made it 3-0 on Ethan Brown’s RBI single in the fourth inning. Brown finished the game 2-for-3.

Courtesy runner Conner Fonger scored Superior’s run in the fifth inning when Fortune reached on an error.

Earl Kraft, the winning pitcher, allowed two hits and struck out two.

Brandon Wing took the loss for Superior, allowing three runs, seven hits and striking out three. Mason Moen finished up, allowing two hits with four strikeouts in three scoreless innings.

Kraft finished with two hits for Ashland and Wyatt O’Bey doubled.

Ashland jumped out to an early lead again in game two with three runs in the top of the first inning on Collin Richmond’s RBI double and Erickson’s two-run single.

But this time Superior responded with four runs in the bottom of the first.

The Spartans loaded the bases when Justin Reinkall and Gunner Hansen walked, and Gunner Johnson reached on an error.

Fonger followed with an RBI single, Hansen scored on an error, and Johnson and Fonger scored on Michael LaJoie’s single.

Fortune singled with two outs in the third inning and eventually scored on Devin Samarzia’s bases-loaded walk.

The Spartans’ final run came in the sixth when Fonger walked and eventually scored on a single by Fortune, who finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Ashland had seven hits, including a double and three singles by Richmond.

Superior also got a single from Rhodes.

Reinkall picked up the win for Superior, allowing two hits with four strikeouts and one walk in five innings. Drake Samarzia pitched the first two innings, allowing five hits, with one strikeout and one walk.

Up next for Superior is the Hibbing Wood Bat Tournament today and Saturday.

The Spartans play Cloquet at 5:30 p.m. and Hibbing at 8 p.m. today. Their final game is against Proctor at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Next week Superior is at Hermantown Tuesday and hosts New Richmond Thursday.
