There was a noticeable absence of major surfwear companies at this year’s Agenda trade show, but that void allowed up-and-coming brands to shine at the annual gathering of action-sports and streetwear brands in Long Beach.

Rip Curl, Billabong, Quiksilver and other Orange County-based brands were no-shows – the event organizer did not return calls by deadline, and reps of some brands said timing didn’t meet launch dates – but what was evident was the presence of small labels making a big name for themselves.

The Agenda Show brings hundreds of brands to the Long Beach Convention Center to showcase styles and trends to thousands of buyers looking to stock their shelves in summer and fall.

Here’s a look at some stand-out brands and products unveiled last week.


The biggest and most impressive floor-show footprint was put together by this Aliso Viejo-based brand, which showcased everything from founder Paul Naude’s personal collection of rare big-wave surfboards to a surfboard shaper mowing foam behind glass.

“We’re just trying to do what we always do – be more into showcasing surf culture than just being an apparel brand,” Naude said.

Vissla has made a push toward producing environmentally conscious products since it launched three years ago, like making boardshorts out of a polyester blended with coconut husks.

Its latest offering is the Eco-Seas wetsuit, made of what its calls naturalprene, which uses a natural rubber foam harvested from rubber trees rather than traditional neoprene that requires fossil fuel to produce. It also uses a water-based and solvent-free laminate glue and has a water-repellant jersey made from about 45 recycled bottles. At $400, it’s not the cheapest wetsuit on the market, but Naude said there’s been positive response to what the company calls its environmentally conscious products.

“As time goes on, I think the youth market are starting to take note of what companies are doing and how they are making product,” he said. “We’re trying to keep abreast and ahead of that trend. And trying to build products that are functional and have the style that we like, but at the same time there’s a level of responsibility going into the production of it.”


This San Clemente-based brand, popular among longboarders who like a fashion-forward yet retro style, has plenty of exciting product coming out this year.

It is expanding its line of swimwear using C-Skin, a neoprene alternative that is woven so it breathes better and wicks moisture away from the body, said Seea rep Summer Nelson.

Within the line are several reversible one-pieces, so women can have two looks in one suit.

Seea was created in 2011 by surfer Amanda Chinchelli, who was tired of the swimwear malfunctions of tiny bikinis and wanted more stylish looks.

One style catching the eye of buyers was the Karina, a retro, high turtleneck style suit with a low back. San Clemente surfer Karina Rozunko, a team rider at Seea, helped design the suit and was modeling it at the show. There’s also the Lucci, named after Seea’s resident photographer, which boasted a flower print on the outside and a reversible, plain look on the inside.

Salty Crew

The San Diego company launched three years ago, and brand ambassador and former pro surfer CJ Hobgood was on hand to chat about its products.

The Florida surfer said Salty Crew is unlike action-sports brands that focus on surf, skate and snow. Rather, it wants to appeal to outdoor enthusiasts who might be interested in other ways to enjoy the water.
