Heavy snowfall in the past 24 hours means Portland Public Schools will not hold school on Thursday and possibly Friday, continuing a tough winter of disruptive snow days.

Interim chief operating officer Courtney Wilton told The Oregonian/OregonLive Wednesday morning the district looks at roads and sidewalks  to decide whether or not to close.

Later in the day Portland called its seventh snow day of the school year.

Wilton noted the amount of snow on the ground Wednesday morning was significant, causing road closures and prompting a requirement that all cars use chains -- insurmountable obstacles for some parents.

"We also have very significant snow accumulation in school parking lots and very limited ability to clear. Also some schools without power now," Wilton wrote in a text message before the decision. "You can draw your own conclusions."

Wilton said he understands many parents are frustrated with the number of snow days. There have been seven so far this school year in Portland Public Schools and as many or more in other Portland-area districts.

Snow days can burden families who have to pay for last-minute child care or take days off work to stay home. Additionally, closures…
