Monterey >> Halfway through its Measure P project, the city of Monterey is wrapping up the summer by getting some major road improvement projects under its belt — just in time for the arrival of the crowds and fancy autos for Classic Car Week.

The improvements to roads and sidewalks are not just visible in certain parts of Monterey but are noted in the city’s Measure P second-year report, which was released this week. The report card, which is essentially broken down into four categories, shows the city’s progress on the $32 million project so far. In all, during the course of Measure P projects that will be accomplished from 2015 to 2019, $17.2 million will be spent on street improvements, $10.8 million on Americans with Disabilities Act upgrades, $2.72 million for storm drain repair and $2 million on sidewalk repairs.

“I think we’re doing well,” said Steve Wittry, Monterey’s acting public works director, about what’s been accomplished so far. Specifically, Wittry noted the large amount of slurry seal pavement surface treatment that was done on Sloat Avenue, the notable amount of road improvement work done in New Monterey and the extensive sidewalk work done in the downtown area.

Out of the $17.2 million allocated for pavement resurfacing and reconstruction, Wittry said that about $10 million had been spent. In terms of storm drain improvements, approximately $1.3 million has been spent of the total $2.72 million allocated while some 43 pipe segments have been completed including Phase 1 of the retrofitting for Pump Station 11 (Lake El Estero).

When it comes to the city’s sidewalks, $1.7 million has been spent from the $2 million set aside for that. So far, sidewalk repairs have been completed in New Monterey, the Oak Grove neighborhood, Cannery Row and the Old Town area.

Wittry, who said the city’s goal is to have a pavement condition index of 67, said he was pleased with the fact Monterey has raised its rating from 54 to 60. The index rates the condition of the surface of a road network.

He also noted the new tree wells installed next to Heritage Harbor that use a rubberized concrete product, which allows water to go into the tree roots while keeping debris out, as another improvement.

“It looks very clean and if it wears well, we’ll be looking to put it in other places where there…
