Swedish LED grow light firm Heliospectra has helped Green Mountain Hydroponics improve crop quality and yields with its LED grow lights. Dave Hartshorn, John Farr, and Ted Farr, founders of Green Mountain Hydroponics in Seattle, Washington have had an interest in hydroponics for decades. However, until a few years ago, the LED grow light technology wasn’t fully mature. In 2013, the team founded Green Mountain Harvest Hydroponics concentrating on growing spring mix, summer crisp lettuce, basil, and watercress. The company started with a modest greenhouse that previously used on a flower farm. Eventually, they secured an account at Whole Foods that has enabled them to scale up their operation.

LED Grow Light Technology

Green Mountain Harvest Hydroponics employed traditional HPS lights in its greenhouse before the company partnered with Heliospectra. Heliospectra and Griffin — the company’s long-term partner — worked together to deploy 115 new LED grow light fixtures to directly replace HPS lights. Because the project was replacing the HPS lights, the installation process was straightforward and the benefits were readily visible to the management team.

“As soon as the new Heliospectra LEDs were installed, Green Mountain recognized immediate benefits from the optimized light spectrum,” said John Farr. “We typically harvested our summer crisp lettuce at 55 days. With Heliospectra, we now harvest between 42 and 45 days. The opportunity to accelerate harvest and create additional revenue cycles significantly scales our business.”

Green Mountain says that using an optimized spectrum of red, blue, and white light from Heliospectra LED grow lights it obtains better penetration and distribution of light all the way down to the bottom of the plant canopy. Also, the new LED lighting helped reduce light pollution that had been a major problem with the HPS lighting.

The bright HPS lights had provoked calls from neighbors and even visits from the local fire department. “The Heliospectra lights mimic the sun and enable Green Mountain to supplement natural daylight during the shorter winter days and adjust to changes in local weather,” added Farr. “The ability to forecast production and predictable, repeatable harvest results has proved invaluable for our business.”

LED Grow Lights Improve Yield and Crop Quality

The Heliospectra grow light solutions helped enhance both yields and crop quality while reducing operational costs. The Griffin and Green Mountain teams point out that the lettuce and basil plants grown under the LED grow lights are now sturdier and more compact plants that suffer from less yellowing and tip burn than those grown using HPS lighting. Furthermore, the LED grow lights have lead to an increase in fresh weight that raises the value of the product for both the business bottom line and consumers.

Also, the Heliospectra lighting solution facilitates faster turns and an accelerated harvest cycle, which Green Mountain says will add at least one additional harvest per year and boost revenue.

“I think the biggest benefits are one, the crop quality and two, the elimination of light pollution,” says Farr. “That was huge for us. Through the …
