'Clear and Sweet' at OZ Arts Nashville

OZ Arts Nashville welcomes acclaimed Seattle-based dance and visual arts collective zoe | juniper this week – with its beautifully immersive “Clear and Sweet.”

This multi-disciplinary performance brings the uniquely American tradition of Sacred Harp singing together with Zoe Scofield’s intense choreography and Juniper Shuey’s cutting-edge visual design. Performed in the “hollow square” — with audience members surrounding the dance space on four sides — the piece highlights shifting points of perspective.

Originating in the American South from the early to mid-1800s, Sacred Harp utilizes a form of music notation called Shape Notes and is performed a cappella. This rich tradition in choral music is highly participatory, and audience members are encouraged to join in. A post-performance question and answer session is planned for Sept. 14.

Sept. 14-15 at OZ Arts Nashville, 6172 Cockrill Bend Circle. Performances at 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday. Tickets $50, available at ozartsnashville.org.

Artist Lecture Series begins at Vanderbilt with Aki Sasamoto

Vanderbilt’s Department of Art and the Studio VU Lecture Series opens the 2017-2018 season with, “Today’s Special,” a lecture by New York-based Japanese performance and installation artist, Aki Sasamoto.

Sasamoto constructs sculptures and environments that double as props and settings for experimental performances, lectures, and monologues that reflect on complex emotions and realities with stream of consciousness logic and deadpan humor. She often collaborates with visual artists, musicians, choreographers, dancers, mathematicians, and scholars.

She has exhibited in numerous international and domestic venues, including the Whitney Biennial 2010, SculptureCenter, Chocolate Factory Theater, and Shanghai Biennale 2016, China.  She is also the co-founder of the non-profit interdisciplinary arts organization, Culture Push.

The free lecture takes place at 6 p.m. Sept. 20 at the E. Bronson Ingram Studio Arts Center, Room 220, at 1204 25th Ave. S.

'Monuments and Structures,' at Belmont’s Leu Art Gallery

In a new exhibition at Belmont’s Leu Art Gallery, three local artists contribute to the ongoing conversation about Nashville’s cultural landscape and the monuments and landmarks that illustrate it. Opening on Friday, “Monuments and Structures,” on view through Oct. 13, features abstract paintings by Brady Haston and abstract photographs by Robin Paris and Tom Williams.

Brady Haston is a Tennessee native whose work is inspired by obscure landmarks and urban reference points.  Robin Paris and Tom Williams are professors at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film and their collaborative work explores the generalized rhetoric within the political or commemorative monumentality of figurative monuments.

A reception and gallery talk with the artists will be held on Thursday, Sept. 21, 4-6 p.m.

Leu Art Gallery is in the Lila D. Bunch Library at 1900 Belmont Blvd.  Hours are  9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-7 p.m., Sunday. Admission is free.

You could watch a dozen seasons of “Grey’s Anatomy” and never see a full tracheal intubation. Most movies and television shows that deal with a medical crisis don’t linger on the removal of breathing tubes, or the first shower after a traumatic injury, or the first bar fight that breaks out around a man in a wheelchair. But “Stronger” runs screaming in pain from the kind of simplistic inspirational storytelling that the subject matter usually yields. It’s a…
