A Woodbridge Township police detective is one of 26 airmen that deployed from New Jersey on Thursday to assist in humanitarian operations in the Virgin Islands after Hurricane Irma.

The airmen are part of New Jersey Air National Guard’s 108th Wing and departed "as part of the massive operation to help the storm-ravaged island return to normalcy," according to a news release.

Many of the airmen on the deployment are veterans of multiple overseas deployments and domestic operations in New Jersey to include hurricanes Irene and Sandy. Eight of the airmen of members of law enforcement.

“These guys are pumped up and ready to go,” said Master Sgt. Santiago Tapia, the Woodbridge detective. “We deploy a lot, but deployments like this are special. We are going someplace where people need our help. Hopefully we can make a difference.”

While in the Virgin Islands, the 108th Airmen will assist civil authorities in maintaining order on the islands, which were among the hardest hit by Hurricane Irma.

Brig. Gen. Michael L. Cunniff, The Adjutant General, told the Airmen before they departed from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst that their presence will have a positive impact.

“During Hurricane Sandy, all I heard from people was how much better they felt when they saw someone in uniform,” Cunniff said. “You won’t just be bringing additional security to the Virgin Islands, you will be bringing peace of mind to the people who see you.”
