Latin NCAP has crash-tested a Brazilian version of the Volkswagen Golf 7, with the popular German hatchback scoring a full five stars for both adult and child occupant protection. The safety authority said that the Golf, along with the Seat Ateca, was "the first to achieve five stars under the stricter protocols introduced in 2016". A Mexican version of the Volkswagen Golf 7 was assessed under the old protocols back in 2014, where it also achieved five stars. In this latest test, a B…

Latin NCAP has crash-tested a Brazilian version of the Volkswagen Golf 7, with the popular German hatchback scoring a full five stars for both adult and child occupant protection.

The safety authority said that the Golf, along with the Seat Ateca, was “the first to achieve five stars under the stricter protocols introduced in 2016”.

A Mexican version of the Volkswagen Golf 7 was assessed under the old protocols back in 2014, where it also achieved five stars. In this latest test, a Brazilian version (of the pre-facelift model, it seems) was used, and despite stricter testing, including a pole impact test and electronic stability control evaluation, the vehicle still achieved a top score.

The VW Golf was furthermore awarded with Latin NCAP’s “advanced award” thanks to its autonomous emergency braking system, which is optional in the range in Brazil. The model tested was fitted with seven airbags, and the body shell was rated as “stable”.

“This is the first time since the latest protocol established in 2016 that we have good results in our region. Perhaps for the NCAPs from other regions, for example those where UN regulations are …

DURBAN, KwaZulu-Natal – The new Mini Countryman has arrived in South Africa, so we headed to KZN for a taste. When we drove the Cooper S Countryman All4 Auto in England at the start of the year, we found that criticisms of the old model regarding the quality of the interior and the firm ride had been addressed, along with some other crucial details. The new crossover is also quite a bit bigger than before, but it comes with a larger pricetag, too. Still, it's well worth having a look at how…

An eagle-eyed CARmag.co.za reader has sent us a handful of images showing a fleet of disguised Audi models testing in Gauteng. Reader Andrew Schlebusch snapped these photographs near Muldersdrift in the Kromdraai Valley. All of the vehicles in the Ingolstadt automaker's testing fleet seem to be wearing Northern Cape numberplates. The group of photographed vehicles appears to include the new Audi A6 sedan, the new A7 Sportback, what looks like the upcoming S8 and what may just be the …

Remember those Tonka toy trucks you used to play with as a kid? Toyota does, too. In fact, the Australian arm of the Japanese automaker has just unveiled the Toyota Hilux Tonka Concept, describing it as a "full-size dream toy for adults". The concept was conceived, designed, assembled and tested by designers and engineers from Toyota Australia's 150-strong product planning and development division. Why? Well, the high-riding off-roader (complete with portal axle) serves to highlight the…

A South African racing icon for the price of a city hatchback... Yes, we're talking about the sought-after V6 models here. The standard unit was a 2,5-litre V6, but Alfa Romeo SA wanted a little more grunt from its car, as the GTV6 would compete in the prestigious local Group 1 racing formula. And so the legendary SA-only 3,0-litre was born. Packaging Basically a two-plus-two styled by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, the four-cylinder models were released in the 1970s. It was an…

When we originally tested the Renegade, we were left fairly impressed with Jeep’s entry-level model. We concluded that test with the words: “the company’s decision to inject a comfortable and enjoyable compact town-goer with a generous helping of Jeep character could prove something of masterstroke”. We gave it a score of 76/100. What is it? However, that was a front-wheel-drive version developing 103 kW and 230 N.m. If you plan on venturing off-road, you ultimately need one of the all-whe…
