The Melbourne man who popped the question in front of Adele and thousands of screaming fans over the weekend says the surprise engagement was an "unbelievable" experience that topped off a horrendous six months. 

The superstar herself was overcome with emotion when Wade Nicholson-Doyle followed his partner Chris up on stage before dropping onto one knee.

Speaking to Fairfax Media, Mr Nicholson-Doyle said ambushing his now-fiancée in front of one of the most famous performers in the world was an unforgettable experience, especially considering the challenges both of them have recently endured. 

"It was unbelievable," he said. "We'll never forget it."
