The Anglo-Swedish drug manufacturer reported the complete response letter (CRL) last week , explaining the US regulator rejection was a result of an inspection.

The firm said: “The CRL does not require the generation of any new clinical data. AstraZeneca and ZS Pharma are committed to working with the FDA to resolve the remaining matters under review as soon as possible” but did not provide details.

It also stressed that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had not asked for more clinical trial data.

The CRL is the second AstraZeneca has received for the drug.

Last May , the firm announced the US regulator had issued it with a letter citing observations made during a pre-approval inspection of the ZS Pharma facility.

According to an initial public offering (IPO) Zs Pharma filed in 2014 – a year before it was acquired by AstraZeneca – Zs-9 (sodium zirconium cyclosilicate) is produced at two company-owned facilities.
