In October last year, BMW revealed the M4 DTM Champion Edition, which borrows the water injection technology from the M4 GTS to achieve lofty peak outputs of 368 kW and 600 N.m. And now this limited edition model has become available in South Africa. Well, sort of. You see, BMW SA has secured 23 of the 200 units that will be built, with local pricing coming in at a cool R2,3-million (yes, that's even more than the M4 GTS cost last year). But all units set aside for South Africa have al…

The Automobile Association says that its attempts to forecast a month-end fuel price have been "complicated" by international oil prices retreating in virtual lockstep with a strengthening rand. The AA was commenting on unaudited fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund. "After a sharp rise from the end of March, international petroleum prices have given up almost all their gains in the past two weeks. Over the same period, the rand has unexpectedly firmed to near its…

What you're looking at is the new BMW M550d xDrive, which employs what the German automaker bills as the "most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine" available in any production car. The Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) has released what it describes as a "concerning" two-star safety rating for the latest GWM Steed. The independent safety authority tested a double-cab version of the latest Steed, which is known as the Steed 6 here in South Africa. The variant tested was the 4x2 petrol model (not offered in SA), and the rating applies to units produced from September 2016. "This is a disappointing result for consumers and the brand," said ANCAP chief…

Does the expanded Everest range have what it takes to turn the Fortuner’s irritation into a headache? While 2017 looks likely to be the year of the double-cab, an intriguing sub-plot involves the lifestyle vehicles that share their underpinnings (and, to a large extent, reputation) with their bakkie-based siblings. Based heavily on the Ranger double-cab that continues to provide a monthly sales-chart irritation to the traditionally all-conquering Toyota Hilux, Ford’s recent expansion of its…
