The Seattle Seahawks offensive struggles wasted another strong performance by the defense in their 17-9 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 1.

That's been a familiar occurrence for the Seahawks, one that safety Earl Thomas has grown accustomed to during his eight seasons in Seattle.

"Man, it's been like this for eight years, man," Thomas told reporters following the game.

The Seahawks mustered just 225 yards of offense, with a paltry 90 yards on the ground. A terrible performance by the offensive line left quarterback Russell Wilson running for his health for most of the game. Wilson completed 14-of-27 passes for 158 yards.

It was the kind of performances by the offense and defense against the Packers that reminded some people of the now infamous story that claimed a fissure in the locker room. The rift was caused by a division between the offense and defense where some players felt head coach Pete Carroll doesn't hold Wilson to the same high standard compared to the defense.

The Seahawks defense held Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the offense in check. The Packers scored 17 points, but one touchdown occurred after Wilson fumbled at the Seattle 5 after he was strip-sacked by Packers defensive tackle Mike Daniels.

The Seahawks have scored 10 or less points in five of their last 17 regular season games.

"We understand that sometimes the offense is not in rhythm like it needs to be," Thomas said.

Seattle wide receiver Doug Baldwin didn't dispute what Thomas said.

"The truth of the matter is, it's been like that for several years. Earl was telling the truth," Baldwin told "We've always kind of sputtered at times on offense and we've leaned on our defense, but understandably so."

Thomas also pointed out that management has invested more heavily on the defense.

The Seahawks have given lucrative contract extensions to Thomas (four years, $40 million in 2014), cornerback Richard Sherman (four years, $56 million in 2014), and safety Kam Chancellor (three years, $36 million in 2017). Defensive linemen Michael Bennett (three years, $31 million in December) and Cliff Avril (four years, $28.5 million in 2014) received extensions as well. They also gave contract…
